Blog 6: Every Day Idioms
The article I chose this week deals with the proper use of idioms in English that are popular in America. It talks about how some people coming from other countries, where their native language isn't English, hear am idiomic statement and may take it in the literal meaning of the phrase. Some examples could be "taking a bull by the horns", "a fish out of water", and "sounding like a broken record". The article talks about ways to learn how to recognize and understand idioms. The most effective way is to listen carefully to the world around you. Soon enough, with enough pracitce, idioms will become apart of daily speech.

It's amazing how many idioms there are. I never even considered that "sounding like a broken record" could be an idiom.
ReplyDeleteBy far, my favorite article!!! Love your pictures with all the examples, I use idioms a lot when I speak and it's funny when I speak to someone whose native language may not be English they look at me completely puzzled or just smile and nod their head when really I know they don't understand and it's too hard to explain!
ReplyDeleteI did my honors project on idioms and I think some of them are just so interesting and funny. I love to find out how they got to be popular saying and where they originate.
ReplyDeleteI love this! I wonder where idioms come from and if there were some truth to them. Did people use to sleep on hay? How does one turn green with envy? I guess if I wasn't a native speaker I would have trouble understanding the expressions. I bet other countries have their own idioms too! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove this! Idioms are a great topic! Like you said in America idioms are popular and part of our lives. And I bet it will be hard for someone from other country to understand the idioms at first. I never gave that situation a thought. That was really interesting to know. Thanks for letting me know.
ReplyDeleteWow, there really are a lot of idioms, aren't there?! It's crazy to think how often we use idioms, and yet so many we have no idea what they mean. I enjoyed your pictures. Some fun idioms. Thanks:)
